yo – <\/strong>they<\/p>\n

Possessive pronouns are the same as personal pronouns except he\/she\/it<\/em> follows the noun e.g. liv mwen<\/em>.<\/p>\n

The possessive pronoun for he\/she\/it<\/em> is \u2018li\u2019<\/em> and is contracted form is \u2018y\u2019<\/em> which follows nouns ending in a vowel\u00a0e.g.<\/em> liv li, lavi\u2019y<\/em>.<\/p>\n

In the case of \u2018ou\u2019 (you)<\/em> the possessive pronoun is contracted when it follows a noun ending in a vowel\u00a0e.g. manman\u2019w<\/em>.<\/p>\n

In Creole there are two genders, male and female, which may be applied to nouns when denoting sex. The distinction of gender\u00a0may be shown by:<\/p>\n

Note: When showing a female has had young, manman<\/em> is used instead of fim\u00e8l<\/em>, especially when the feminine has no clear form:<\/p>\n

Creole has a definite article \u2018la\u2019 with a contracted form \u2018a\u2019<\/em>. The contracted form is used with nouns ending in a vowel. The definite article, which is translated as the English \u2018the\u2019<\/em>and hyphenated, follows the noun. For example:<\/p>\n

I ka lav\u00e9 zasy\u00e8t-la<\/strong>.<\/em> He is washing the plate.<\/p>\n

Zanfan-a ka d\u00f2mi.<\/em><\/strong> The child is sleeping.<\/p>\n

However, the English definite article \u2018the\u2019 is not always translated by Creole \u2018la\u2019. For example:<\/p>\n

S\u00f2l\u00e8y kouch\u00e9<\/strong>.<\/em> The sun has set.<\/p>\n

The indefinite article in Creole, \u2018yon\u2019<\/em> (which also means \u2018one\u2019) or \u2018on\u2019<\/em> precedes the noun and is translated as the English \u2018a\u2019<\/em>or \u2018an\u2019<\/em>. For example:<\/p>\n

Although English is the official language of Dominica, much of the population also speaks Kw\u00e9y\u00f2l (Creole) – a French-based patois.<\/p>\n

This content is provided by “Dominica’s Diksyonn\u00e8 Kw\u00e9y\u00f2l -Anngl\u00e9, English-Creole Dictionary” by Marcel Fontaine, 1991. \u00a0Marcel Fontaine published a Kw\u00e9y\u00f2l\u00a0Diksyonne in 1991.<\/p>\n

This useful book has over 6,000 entries, a Pronunciation and Grammar Guide and Common Phrases; it can be found in local bookstores. \u00a0Mr. Fontaine’s contribution in recording this traditionally oral language onto the written page is invaluable in helping to preserve it.<\/p>\n

In the\u00a0northeast Villages of Marigot and Wesley creole is not widely spoken, but instead they speak a pidgin English called ‘Cocoy’ or ‘Kockoy’.<\/p>\n
